According to the most recent data, it is estimated that around 1.1 million Australians over the age of five are living with an eating disorder, or approximately 4.45% of the population. This number indicates that 286,069 individuals in Victoria had an eating disorder.
In 2023, there were an estimated 1,273 deaths nationally due to eating disorders.
Less than one in three (30%) of those with eating disorders seek help.
In recent months, a national conversation led by Assistant Minister Emma McBride highlighted that many people with lived experience continue to report that access to care is patchy, inconsistent, difficult to navigate, and at times detrimental.
The Victorian eating disorders strategy 2024-31 has been developed to respond to the increasing rates and impact of eating disorders on the Victorian community. The strategy represents a significant step for eating disorder prevention, early intervention and identification as well as treatment.
Therapy sessions consist of frequent consultations, with a focus on nutritional rehabilitation, psychoeducation, life skills training, and addressing any personal psychological aspects that warrant attention. Multiple professionals can form part of such treatment, including a psychologist, psychiatrist, dietitian and your GP in Victoria.
If the need exists, we welcome the input of family members and significant others who wish to contribute to your treatment. Although the boundaries of your treatment need to be prioritised, the interaction with these family members during the course of treatment is discussed with you, and managed in a professional and ethical manner. Whether family members only attend the initial session, or remain part of the ongoing intervention itself, our approach is adaptive to what you and your family need.
Like other regions, Victoria experiences societal influences that promote unattainable beauty standards, amplified by media and social media. This can lead to body dissatisfaction, particularly among adolescents and young adults, making them more vulnerable to developing eating disorders.
Victoria’s multicultural environment provides a wide range of cultural norms regarding food and body image. While this diversity enriches the community, certain cultural pressures or stigmas about appearance and eating habits can negatively impact mental health and contribute to disordered eating behaviors.
Victoria has a well-established healthcare system with specialized eating disorder programs. However, barriers such as long wait times, high demand for services, and a lack of resources in rural and regional areas can hinder access. Additionally, stigma surrounding mental health and eating disorders may prevent individuals from seeking timely care.
Our therapeutic approach is a holistic person-centered approach grounded in Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and incorporates elements from other treatment modalities as needed.
In short, this approach tries to be welcoming and flexible — we meet you where you are in the Victoria area!
