The Reverence Recovery Support Group is a weekly face-to-face support group for adults. It’s facilitated by a clinical psychologist who is credentialed and experienced in the treatment of eating disorders. We welcome those who already have an individual therapist, but wish to attend our support group to bolster their treatment.
Support groups bring together those facing similar challenges to engage in a supportive and collaborative environment. It’s widely recognised that such groups offer a valuable setting for members to explore and address their concerns, share thoughts and feelings, and grow together. Within such a group setting, people can find solace in realising that they are not alone in their struggles, fostering a sense of empathy and understanding.
Reverence Recovery recognises that eating disorders are complex, and no two journeys look the same. Whether you’re dealing with restrictive eating, binge eating, or any combination of disordered behaviours, Guil has expertise to guide you through recovery with compassion and clarity.
You are more than just a diagnosis. Reverence Recovery meets you where you are, with compassion, professionalism, and unwavering support.
Guil’s tailored approach helps you break free from the cycle of disordered eating and cultivate a healthier relationship with food and yourself.
He’ll help you develop a foundation of self-compassion and resilience so you can navigate your challenges.
While Guil has a special interest in eating disorders, he also provides care for a wide range of mental health conditions. These services include:
An eating disorder can lead to abnormal eating habits, characterized by consuming excessive or insufficient amounts of food that do not align with the body’s nutritional requirements for optimal health. Over time, the habit becomes stronger than your will to control it, potentially influenced by distorted beliefs and societal pressures related to body image, beauty, and weight.
Eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, binge eating or body image issues can be linked to experience of depression, anxiety, confusion and emotional torment. Often with eating disorders there can be an internal battle between the part of you that wants to recover and the part that doesn’t.
The factors that lead to the development of an eating disorder are complex. They involve a range of biological, psychological and other mental health conditions, there may be different causes, such as:
Exploration and Shared Concerns: You’ll have the opportunity to discuss your unique struggles with eating disorders in a confidential setting. Group members can offer feedback and support based on their own experiences.
Open Communication and Emotional Release: Support groups provide a safe space to express your thoughts and feelings openly without judgment. This can be extremely helpful in managing difficult emotions associated with eating disorders.
Mutual Support and Growth: By sharing stories, successes, and challenges, group members can empower and motivate each other on their individual paths to recovery. Witnessing the progress of others can also be a powerful source of inspiration.
Reduced Isolation and Increased Empathy: Realizing you’re not alone in your struggles can be incredibly comforting. Support groups foster a strong sense of community, empathy, and understanding.
Symptoms vary, depending on the type of eating disorder. Anorexia, bulimia and binge-eating disorder are the most common eating disorders. People with eating disorders can have all different body types and sizes.
Anorexia nervosa is a distorted thinking or fear-based disorder centred on weight gain where the person severely reduces food intake.
Bulimia nervosa is a self-control style disorder with extremes of binge or excessive eating followed by impulses to purge or expel the food.
Binge eating or impulses to binge is where eating may be fast and not enjoyable or social, when not even hungry, but without purging or compensatory behaviours.
An obsession disorder where the person has intense thinking and preoccupation around the pursuit of a healthy diet or “healthy weight”. The focus on diet may be the focus of an underlying anxiety.
